Copenhagen City Hall (Københavns Rådhus) is one of the most popular venues for couples choosing to get married in Denmark. With its stunning architecture, rich history, and simple wedding process, it’s the perfect venue for an intimate ceremony or elopement abroad. Here’s everything you need to know about planning your wedding ceremony at Copenhagen City Hall.
Location and Accessibility
Copenhagen City Hall is located at: Rådhuspladsen 1, 1550 Copenhagen V, Denmark. It is right in the heart of Copenhagen, next to the famous Tivoli Gardens. The location is easily reachable via public transportation (bus, metro) or by foot, making it a convenient option for international couples.
Ceremony Times and Schedule
Wedding ceremonies at Copenhagen City Hall take place on the following days:
Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
Saturdays: 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
It is recommended to book your ceremony date well in advance (10-12 weeks in advance), as available time slots can fill up quickly during peak wedding seasons.

Marriage license
Before booking your wedding ceremony at the Town Hall, you are required to obtain a marriage license from the Danish Agency of Family Law (AFL). This license is a mandatory step in the process and serves as official approval for your marriage to take place in Denmark.
The AFL will review your application and the submitted documents to ensure that you meet the legal requirements for marriage in Denmark. Once your marriage license is granted, you can proceed to book your ceremony at the desired Town Hall.
While it is possible to handle this independently, we recommend working with experienced wedding agencies, such as Nordic Adventure Weddings, who specialise in navigating the Danish legal framework for marriage.
These experts can assist with:
Collecting and verifying required documents.
Submitting paperwork to the Agency of Family Law (AFL) on your behalf.
Ensuring compliance with Danish regulations to avoid delays or complications.
When you choose a package with agencies like Nordic Adventure Weddings, all paperwork is included in the service, saving you time and minimising stress. This is especially valuable for international couples unfamiliar with local requirements.
With professionals handling the details, you can focus on enjoying your special day while they manage the administrative process for you.

Presenting Your Documents Before the Wedding
If you do not have a Danish personal identity number or any other Nordic country identity number, you are required to present your passport/national ID (and residence permit/visa for the EU, if applicable) in person at Copenhagen City Hall.
We recommend doing this one workday prior to your wedding to ensure a smooth process.
Document Check Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00–13:45.
Please go to the gift shop located on the left side inside the main entrance. Allow up to 2 hours for the document verification process. You will need to return to pick up your ID the same day before 15:45.
If you are unable to present your documents the day before, you may bring them on the day of your wedding. However, please arrive at least 1 hour early to allow sufficient time for the verification process.
The Wedding Ceremony

The ceremony itself is short, elegant, and intimate:
Duration: Approximately 10–15 minutes.
The couple exchanges vows, and a marriage certificate is signed and presented immediately after the ceremony.
Your wedding will take place in the elegant Wedding Hall on the first floor of Copenhagen City Hall, overlooking the stunning Great Hall. The room’s walls are adorned with Danish folklore scenes, creating a charming and romantic atmosphere.
The ceremony is intimate and ideal for couples marrying alone or surrounded by close family and friends. The registrar will begin with a short speech, followed by asking if you accept each other as spouses. If desired, you can exchange rings before signing the marriage documents. Your official marriage certificates will then be presented, marking the end of the ceremony.
Practical Information
Language Options: The ceremony can be conducted in Danish, English, or German, depending on the couple’s preference.
