Denmark has long been one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ couples, making it a wonderful place to celebrate a same-sex wedding abroad. For international couples, the process is refreshingly straightforward, and once the necessary marriage approval has been obtained, the wedding itself can be beautifully personal.

For Roy and Tin from Hong Kong, that meant travelling to Denmark for an intimate forest wedding with just two close friends by their side.

A Legal Same-Sex Wedding in Denmark – Surrounded by Nature

One of the things we love most about weddings in Denmark is that a legal civil ceremony does not always have to take place inside a traditional town hall.

Depending on the municipality and location, the registrar can come to the wedding venue, allowing the couple to say their legal “I do” in beautiful surroundings.

For Roy and Tin, we chose one of our most magical forest locations: the TreeTop House, hidden among the trees and surrounded by Danish nature.

The house has a beautiful terrace approximately six metres above the forest floor. It creates a wonderfully private setting for couples who dream of something completely different from a conventional city wedding.

Just the Couple, Two Friends – and Some Very Special Guests

Roy and Tin wanted their wedding to remain very small and personal. Only two friends joined them in Denmark, making the celebration feel less like a formal event and more like a special day shared with the people closest to them.

But they brought a few additional guests from Hong Kong too.

The couple collect toys, and some favourites travelled all the way to Denmark with them. The little characters became part of the wedding decorations and added a wonderfully personal and playful detail to the day.

It is touches like these that make an intimate wedding truly belong to the couple.

Saying “I Do” in the Treetops

The legal wedding ceremony took place at the TreeTop House, surrounded by forest.

There was no large guest list, no ballroom and no elaborate production. Just Roy and Tin, their two friends, the registrar and the quiet beauty of the Danish woods around them.

After the ceremony, they headed into the forest for their wedding photoshoot. The natural landscape became their backdrop – green meadows, trees, rocks and quiet forest paths – giving them time to simply enjoy being newly married.

Roy and Tin’s wedding is a lovely reminder that a wedding does not need to be big to be extraordinary.

Sometimes all you need is the person you love, a couple of good friends, a beautiful place – and perhaps a few favourite toys that have travelled halfway around the world to celebrate with you.
