How to Get Married in Denmark: Step-by-Step Guide

Denmark is known as one of the most straightforward and easiest country in the world  for couples to tie the knot, especially for international couples. The process is simple, efficient, and inclusive. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process:

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before starting the application, ensure you meet Denmark's marriage requirements. Denmark allows both EU and non-EU citizens to marry and is inclusive of all nationalities, religions, and same-sex couples.

Step 2: Collect Necessary Documents

You'll need to gather specific documents, such as:

  • Valid passports or national ID cards.

  • Proof of residency (if applicable).

  • Certificates of marital status to show you're free to marry (e.g., divorce or death certificates if previously married).

  • Birth certificates may also be required for dependants.

Check with your wedding planner to confirm required documentation.

Step 3: Choose Your Venue

Decide if you want a simple town hall ceremony or a Romantic Location wedding. Depends on the venue chosen, apply for the corresponding municipality.

Step 4: Apply for a Wedding License

Submit your documents to the Danish Agency of Family Law (AFL, or family court). Once approved, they issue a wedding license valid for four months. Fees for processing the application are around €255.

Pro Tip: We recommend working with an experienced wedding agency, as ours. We’re familiar with the rules, can ensure your documents are accurate, and help avoid delays caused by incomplete or incorrect applications.

Step 5: Book Your Ceremony Date

Once your wedding license is approved, schedule your ceremony at your chosen venue. Availability may vary, so book early to secure your preferred date.

Step 6: Prepare for the Ceremony

A civil ceremony requires two witnesses. If you’re eloping or don’t have witnesses, the venue or planner can arrange this.

Step 7: Travel to Denmark

Once everything is arranged, it’s time for you to travel to Denmark.

Some municipalities may require you to check in a day or two before the ceremony.

Please ensure that you are fully prepared to travel legally. This includes obtaining any necessary visas or travel documents and ensuring you comply with Denmark's entry requirements. Make sure to check the Schengen visa regulations if you are traveling from a non-EU country, as Denmark is part of the Schengen Area. Also, be aware of your permitted stay and avoid overstaying the allowed time within the Schengen Zone.

This responsibility lies with the couple, so we recommend planning your trip carefully to avoid any legal complications during your stay in Denmark.

Step 9: Receive Your Marriage Certificate

On the wedding day, after the ceremony, you’ll receive an internationally recognized marriage certificate in Danish, English, German, and French. This document is valid for legal purposes worldwide.

Step 10: Plan the Next Steps

If required, authenticate your marriage certificate with an apostille, or with appropriate embassy- for use in your home country. Your Danish wedding planner  can assist with this process.
