Tara & Kalum’s Hammershus Elopement: Just the Two of Them on Bornholm

For Tara and Kalum, getting married was never about creating a huge event.

It was about the two of them.

They travelled from Ireland to the Danish island of Bornholm for an intimate adventure elopement — just the two of them, an extraordinary location, their own vows and an entire island waiting to be explored.

No big guest list. No complicated wedding schedule. No pressure to entertain everyone else.

Instead, they chose an elopement abroad that felt personal, adventurous and completely their own.

One of the reasons Tara and Kalum chose Bornholm for their elopement was the possibility of having a legally binding wedding right in the heart of nature. There was no need to separate the legal formalities from their dream ceremony — they could officially get married at their chosen outdoor location, surrounded by the dramatic landscape of Bornholm. After saying their vows and signing the documents, they received their international marriage certificate directly into their hands and left Hammershus officially married.

Their wedding ceremony took place high above the Baltic Sea among the ancient ruins of Hammershus Castle.

And it was every bit as magical as it sounds.

An All-Inclusive Adventure Elopement on Bornholm

Located in the Baltic Sea, this beautiful Danish island feels wonderfully removed from everyday life. It has dramatic rocky coastline, forests, white sandy beaches, charming fishing villages, historic ruins and tiny roads leading through landscapes that seem made for exploring.

It is also surprisingly diverse.

Within one day, you can stand on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea, walk through a forest, explore ancient castle ruins and finish the afternoon barefoot on a beach.

Tara and Kalum arrived before their wedding day and used their arrival day simply to explore.

There was nothing they needed to organise.

They could discover the island, enjoy being together and settle into the wonderfully strange and exciting feeling that comes with travelling somewhere beautiful knowing:

A Slow Wedding Morning at Hotel Fredensborg

Tara and Kalum stayed at the cozy Fredensborg hotel, a beautiful seaside base for their Bornholm elopement.

Surrounded by greenery and close to the Baltic Sea, the hotel has a private garden, swimming pool and direct access to the beach.

Their wedding morning began with a Scandinavian breakfast before they returned to their room to get ready.

And this is one of the things we love about a two-person elopement.

There is time.

Time for breakfast.

Time to get ready.

Time to look out of the window and realise that this is actually your wedding day.

There is no room full of people waiting for you and no complicated schedule pulling you in ten different directions.

Just the two of you.

We Picked Them Up — And the Adventure Began

Once Tara and Kalum were ready, we collected them from the hotel.

From that moment, they didn't have to think about logistics.

Their only job was to enjoy the day.

And Bornholm gave us perfect weather.

Beautiful light, blue skies, the Baltic Sea in the distance and just enough wind to give everything that unmistakable Scandinavian feeling.

We headed north towards one of the most spectacular places on the island.

Hammershus.

A Wedding Ceremony at Hammershus Castle Ruins

Hammershus is not a traditional wedding venue.

And that is precisely what makes it so extraordinary.

Standing dramatically above the Baltic Sea on Bornholm's northern coastline, Hammershus is Northern Europe's largest medieval castle ruin.

Ancient stone walls rise from the landscape, surrounded by open sky, rugged nature and sweeping views towards the sea.

No elaborate wedding decoration is needed here.

Nature and history have already done the work.

Tara and Kalum made their way to the top of the ruins for their ceremony.

There were no rows of chairs.

No large wedding party.

No audience.

Just Tara and Kalum, our witnesses, centuries-old castle walls, the sea below us — and the Bornholm wind.

Private Vows Above the Baltic Sea

Standing together at Hammershus, Tara and Kalum exchanged their own vows.

This was their moment.

Personal words spoken to one another in one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Denmark.

There is something very different about exchanging vows during an intimate elopement.

When there is no audience, you aren't speaking to a room.

You're speaking only to the person you're marrying.

And with nothing around them except the ruins, the sea and the wind, their ceremony felt incredibly intimate.

Exactly as an elopement should.

Champagne at the Castle Ruins

And then they were married.

It was time for champagne.

Tara and Kalum toasted to their marriage surrounded by Hammershus and the Baltic Sea.

No ballroom.

No formal reception.

Just two newlyweds, two glasses of champagne and an ancient Danish castle ruin.

Sometimes the simplest celebrations become the moments you remember most.

The Wedding Was Over. The Adventure Wasn't.

After the ceremony, we didn't head back to the hotel.

Instead, Tara and Kalum's wedding day became a Bornholm adventure.

Together with their photographer, they continued around the island, stopping at different locations for photographs and simply enjoying their first hours as a married couple.

This is one of our favourite parts of creating an adventure elopement on Bornholm.

Your ceremony location doesn't have to be your only backdrop.

The entire island becomes part of your wedding.

Cliffs.

Beaches.

Forests.

Tiny roads.

Rocky coastline.

Hidden corners overlooking the Baltic Sea.

Instead of spending hours posing at one traditional wedding venue, you get to explore.

And somewhere along the way, beautiful photographs happen.

Tara and Kalum chose to make their wedding entirely about the two of them.

But an adventure elopement doesn't necessarily mean getting married completely alone.

Or perhaps ten of your favourite people.

You could exchange vows at Hammershus and celebrate afterwards with an intimate dinner, or spend the rest of the day exploring Bornholm together.
