What are requirements to get married in Denmark?

Of course, there are the standard restrictions you would expect.  They are:

  • Both parties must be at least 18 years old and unmarried.

  • Any previous marriages must be dissolved

  • Close relatives are not permitted to marry

  • Individuals under guardianship must have permission from the guardian

  • Documentation for legal entry into Denmark

What documents are required for foreign couples from Germany to get married in Denmark?

For legal marriage in Denmark the following documents are required by the Danish Authorities:

  •  Passport or EU/EEA ID card

  •  Certificate of Residence if you share an address.

  •  Schengen visa or German Residence Permit

  •  Proof of Relationship

  •  Divorce decree absolute, if divorced (ask us if legalization needed)

Can I get married in Denmark on a tourist Visa?

Yes, you can get married in Denmark on a visitor visa or student visa. The visa must be valid while you are staying in Denmark.  

You don't need to be a citizen or a resident of EU to get married in Denmark.

Is marriage certificate from Denmark Recognised in Germany?

Marriage conducted in Denmark is recognized worldwide, and immediately recognized in Germany.

According to the bilateral agreement made between Denmark and Germany in 1936, Danish marriage certificate do not need additional legalization. Only in case if one of partners need to come back to the non-EU home country and prepare the documents for the family reunion, legalization through the Apostil might be needed.

You can have up to 2 marriage certificates for no extra cost and they are written in 5 different languages including German so there’s no need for translation.

How do I register a Danish marriage in Germany?

You are back home and the Danish marriage needs to be registered in Germany – what is the next step?


Simply request for German marriage certificate in your local Rathaus (civil registry office), showing your Danish marriage registration document.


If one of you are not resident in Germany, or any other EU country, you must to come back to your home country and

at the German embassy request for "Ehegattennachzug” – a special permission for spouses’ reunification.
General requirements to receive it: applicants basis knowledge of German language, sufficient earnings and adequate habitation for German-based partner.


With "Ehegattennachzug" you come up to Germany and immediately apply for a German residence permit at the local immigration office "Ausländerbehörde”.
